IITK email introduction

IIT Kanpur has open source installation of mailing system. the mail servers can be accessed via mail clients such as Thunderbird, KMail, MS Outlook etc. or via web mail interface. Stored mails on the server can be accesses via POP3(S) or IMAP(S) protocol. Usually POP3 is used if you have a slow connection (i.e. residing outside in an remote place which has very slow Internet). In POP3 mails are downloaded from mail server and stored locally. IMAP connection should be used within LAN which is an high speed connection.

Following two POP3/IMAP servers can be used by the IITK community.

qasid.iitk.ac.in:
Can be used both from internet and Intranet via port 143(IMAP) and 993 (IMAPS).
newmailhost.cc.iitk.ac.in:
Can only be used within Intranet via port 143(IMAP) and 993 (IMAPS).
POP service will download all mails from server to local machine, so users has to be careful while using POP service. IMAP service will download all mails from server but also keep a copy on the IMAP server. It also has 2 SMTP servers for end users use.
mmtp.iitk.ac.in:
Can be used both from Internet and Intranet via port 25(SMTP) and 465 (SMTPS).
smtp.cc.iitk.ac.in:
Can only be used within Intranet via port 25(SMTP) and 465 (SMTPS).
Following 2 web interface can be used for accessing mailing system.
webmail.iitk.ac.in:
Can be used both from internet and Intranet via port 80 (HTTP) and 443 (HTTPS).
webmail1.iitk.ac.in:
Can only be used within Intranet via port 80 (HTTP) and 443 (HTTPS).
webmail2.iitk.ac.in:
Can only be used within Intranet via port 443 (HTTPS) only.
nwm.iitk.ac.in:
Can be used both from internet and intranet via port 443 (HTTPS) only.

CC recommends to use of qasid and mmtp in mobile devices and newmailhost and smtp in desktops. It is also recommends to use the secure version of the service. We update and patch the most of the servers on every Saturday.
